The initiative was aimed at bringing sports to the children, to donate sport equipment to the school and to empower the teachers on basic coaching skills. The school receives no government funding and many of the children come from the informal settlements in and around Seaview where the parents are for the most part unemployed. The sports that were covered were soccer, cricket and athletics.
The trio of students are all astute sportsmen who have represented their provinces in some sport code. The initiative was part of the Department of Human Movement Science and the International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) community engagement programme.
The organizers would like to thank Clarendon Primary, Andrew Beynon, Glenda Brunette, Ali Agherdien and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Sport Management students for their kind donation of sports kit and equipment as well as toys, clothing, books, school bags and water bottles. They have really changed the lives of many children as well as the destiny of the Island Forest Nature Reserve School.
