Vincent Monnier, senior manager for International Relations at CIES, congratulated the students on their fine achievement and took them on a reflective and memorable journey of the programme they had completed.
Khaya Matiso, NMMU Dean of Students, emphasized that sport needs to be governed by properly qualified sport managers who have a passion for the development and improvement of sport and that the FIFA/CIES/NMMU programme was playing a major role in realizing this objective. He also recounted the quote from Nelson Mandela that “sport has the power to change the world” and that the graduating students had the responsibility to ensure that this was done in a positive and meaningful way.
Prof Denver Hendricks, CIES coordinator for South Africa, spoke to the students about what it meant to be an alumnus of the qualification and encouraged them to remain active participants within the broader CIES University Network.
Six students were honoured for their fine academic achievements, namely, David Kappel (85%) Yoliswa Lumka (82%), Jonothan Rumbelow (80%), Buhlebethu Dumbu and Kaamila Herman (77%) and Sharief Gamiet (75%).
This year also saw ten international students completing the programme from countries such as Nigeria, Lesotho, Namibia, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
David Kappel and Yoliswa Lumka, who will represent the NMMU 6th edition class in the annual final research project competition of the CIES University Network, concluded the evening with a presentation on behalf of the class of 2011/12.
